However, if you're a cyclist on the road from Porto to Lisbon in Portugal then I can highly recommend that you avoid the IC2 between these cities, and take a wide detour around Leiria. There's nothing wrong with the city itself, but the roads are seriously dangerous and overcrowded with cars and trucks.
Kumi and I agreed that its better to get onto a secondary road system, even if it meant we needed to do some hill work. Anything was better than the IC2. We navigated to the N362 and even though we had some hills to climb, we ended up having a fantastic day. The wind was blowing really strong, but as luck would have it, it was a tail wind and it felt like we were cycling on those travellators you get at big airports.
The scenery was also beautiful with very little traffic, so all in all, a really good day.
We are now in Sanatrem (pronounced Santaray), and tomorrow we head off in a South Easterly direction away from Lisbon toward the Spanish coast and Gibraltar.
Some friends from South Africa happened to be in Lisbon at the time and they took a detour on the way to Porto to meet up with us. It was so good to catch up.
